Reddit uses three different labels, and they tell you who took the content down. That matters because it changes which method will work.
- [deleted]: the author removed it. Reddit also blanks the username. Only a capture made before the deletion can show the text.
- [removed]: a moderator or Reddit itself removed it. The author can still see their own text when logged in. Captures work, and Reveddit often works too.
- [unavailable]: the account was suspended or banned. Sometimes the profile URL returns a 404 instead. The posts may still be readable in captures of the threads they appeared in.
Method 1: open the Wayback capture of the post
The Internet Archive crawls Reddit constantly, and it captures threads that get linked from elsewhere within hours. Take r/programming. Because its threads get linked from newsletters and Hacker News, most popular ones are captured the same day, often before any moderator acts. A capture from that window shows the post body and the top comments exactly as they were.

For a single comment, use the permalink to that comment rather than the thread URL. Permalinks get captured less often, but when they are captured the comment is at the top of the page and fully expanded.
Method 2: try the old.reddit.com capture
The Wayback Machine treats old.reddit.com and www.reddit.com as different pages, and each has its own capture history. If the new-design URL has no useful capture, replace www with old in the address and paste that instead. Many long-time users and bots link to old.reddit.com, so older threads often have more captures there.
The old layout has a second advantage. It loads more comments per page and does not hide long threads behind a load-more button, so a single capture tends to hold more of the discussion.
Method 3: Reveddit for moderator-removed items
Reveddit shows content that moderators removed but the author did not delete. Put a username or a thread URL into it and it lists removed comments and posts with their text. It works because Reddit still serves that text to the author, and Reveddit compares what the public sees with what the author sees.
It is partial. It cannot show anything the author deleted, it misses items removed before it first saw them, and Reddit's rate limits make it slow or empty at times. Try it after the captures, not before.
Why the Pushshift tools stopped
Until 2023, Pushshift kept a running copy of nearly every Reddit post and comment, and tools like Removeddit and Unddit read from it. In 2023 Reddit changed its API terms and cut Pushshift off. Removeddit and Unddit went dark within months. Reveddit survived only because it never depended on Pushshift for removed content.
Reddit also closed the side doors. Its public data endpoints now answer 403 to servers that lack OAuth, and old.reddit.com blocks them too. That is why any tool promising a live, account-free copy of a deleted post today is either using an authorized app, which is rate-limited and cannot see deleted text anyway, or is showing you a capture like everyone else.
What cannot be recovered
Some content is gone for good, and it is better to know that up front.
- Posts that were never captured. A thread with ten upvotes in a small subreddit may have no capture at all.
- Anything from a private subreddit. The Internet Archive's crawler is logged out, so it only ever saw the private-community notice.
- Content deleted within minutes of posting, before any crawler arrived.
- Images and videos hosted on Reddit's own servers. Captures often keep the text and lose the media.
- Direct messages and chat, which were never public.

Straight answers
Will the author or the moderators know I looked?+
No. Reading a capture from the Internet Archive involves Reddit not at all. Reddit only records views from its own site and app, and even then it does not tell authors who viewed a post.
Can I see posts from a private subreddit?+
No. Private subreddits were never visible to logged-out crawlers, so no capture contains their content. If the subreddit went private later, captures from when it was public still work.
Why does the capture also say [removed]?+
The crawler arrived after the removal. Step back through the capture timeline to an earlier date. If every capture shows [removed], try the old.reddit.com URL, then Reveddit.
Is it legal to read deleted Reddit posts this way?+
Yes. You are reading a public library copy of a page that was public when it was saved. You are not accessing Reddit's systems, bypassing a login, or reaching anything that was private.
Does the Reddit viewer cost anything?+

Can I see everything a deleted user ever posted?+
Not in one place. When a user deletes their account, Reddit blanks the username on every post, and the profile page returns nothing. Captures of the profile page from before the deletion show the posts that were on it at the time, usually the most recent few hundred.
Why does Reddit itself block me even though I am not logged in?+
Reddit shows a login wall or a blocked notice to many visitors on VPNs, in some regions, and on the new design. It is not about you. The captures do not go through Reddit, so they are not affected.
