Reddit archive: see deleted and removed posts, comments and user pages

Every public Reddit page has a URL, and the Internet Archive files its captures under that URL. When you paste a link or type a username, PeekVault asks the archive's index for every capture of that page under both www.reddit.com and old.reddit.com, merges the two lists, and sorts them by date. You see the count and the span at a glance, for example 14 captures between March 2019 and June 2024. Opening a capture loads that snapshot in a reader with the Wayback toolbar stripped out, so the page reads the way it did on that day.

The date is the whole point. A post that was deleted on 3 May is intact in a capture from 2 May and gone in a capture from 4 May. The archive does not know which is which, so the list shows every date and lets you choose. Most people want the newest capture from before the placeholder appeared, which is usually obvious once the dates are side by side.

Reddit keeps the URL alive when content disappears and fills the hole with a label that says who acted. [deleted] is the author, and Reddit blanks the username too. [removed] is a moderator, an AutoModerator rule, a spam filter or Reddit's admins, and the username normally survives. A profile that returns 404, with [unavailable] on old comments, is a suspended or deleted account, and everything it ever wrote goes dark in one move.

The archive treats them differently in practice. Removed posts are the easiest to recover, because they were usually removed after they drew attention, and attention is what gets a page crawled. Author deletions are more often quiet posts with no captures at all. Suspensions wipe years of history at once, most of it never captured, which is where profile captures earn their keep: one capture of u/username from before the suspension lists hundreds of items the live site no longer shows.

Type u/username and the archive lists every capture of that profile. Each capture is the profile page as the crawler saw it: the account's newest posts and comments, with text, scores and the subreddit each one was in. Step through the captures by year to watch the history fill in. For an account that was later deleted or suspended, these captures are the only public record of what it wrote, because Reddit removes the username from every post at the same time.

Two limits to know before you start. A profile capture holds the most recent items at that date, so a prolific account's older posts appear only in older captures. And accounts nobody linked to may have no captures at all; the archive follows links, and a profile that was never linked was never crawled.

Comments follow the same rules as posts, with one twist: what a capture contains depends on which Reddit design the crawler was served. Captures of old.reddit.com threads carry the full comment tree as plain HTML, so a comment deleted or removed after the capture is still readable there. Captures of the redesign usually stop after the post and a handful of comments, because the rest arrive by script after the crawler has left. PeekVault checks both hosts for every thread and labels each capture with its host.

For one comment, paste its permalink; comment pages are captured less often than threads, so if the list is empty try the parent thread. For everything one account said, use u/username as above. For comments a moderator removed in the last few months, Reveddit is the better tool, and empty results here link to it.

Nothing live. Reddit answers logged-out servers with 403, so this page never touches reddit.com and cannot show a post published an hour ago unless a capture already exists. Nothing from private or quarantined subreddits, which the crawler could never enter. No keyword search: the archive is a filing cabinet keyed by URL, not a search engine. And no captures of pages nobody ever linked to.
