A post the author deleted ([deleted])
If the Internet Archive captured the post page before the deletion, you read it exactly as it looked then. If the only captures are from after, you see [deleted] there too.
A post or comment a moderator removed ([removed])
Same rule: a capture from before the removal shows the text. Removed items are more often recoverable than deleted ones, because removals tend to happen after a post got attention and was crawled.
A suspended or banned user's page
The live page is gone, but captures of u/username from before the suspension list their posts and comments. Only pages the crawler reached are available.
Live Reddit, private subreddits, or posts nobody ever linked to
Reddit blocks logged-out servers, so nothing here is live. Private and quarantined subreddits were never captured. A post with zero captures cannot be shown by anyone.
Why Reddit removed it vs. the author deleted it
Reddit leaves the URL alive when content disappears, and puts a placeholder where the text was. Which placeholder tells you who acted. [deleted] is the author: they pressed delete, and Reddit also blanks the username. [removed] is a moderator, an AutoModerator rule, a spam filter, or Reddit's admins; the username usually stays visible, and the author may not have been told. [unavailable] and a 404 on the profile mean the account was suspended, in which case every post and comment it made goes dark at once.
This matters for what you can recover. Removals tend to happen to posts that got attention, and posts that got attention got linked, and links get crawled. So the Internet Archive often holds a capture from before a removal. Author deletions are more often quiet posts nobody linked to, which means fewer captures. And a suspension takes down years of history in one go, most of it never captured. The viewer shows you the capture dates so you can tell at a glance whether any predate the placeholder.
Why this works when mirrors don't
Reddit returns 403 to servers that are not logged in, including old.reddit.com and the .json endpoints that used to power third-party readers. The tools that read Reddit's firehose, Pushshift and everything built on it, lost public access in 2023. What remains for a logged-out reader is the Internet Archive, which keeps crawling public Reddit pages the way it always has. PeekVault asks the archive for every capture of the URL you pasted, under both www.reddit.com and old.reddit.com, and opens the newest one in a reader with the Wayback toolbar removed. Take r/programming: its front page has captures on most days since 2006, and a popular thread there typically has three to ten captures spread over its first week.

Can I see deleted Reddit posts without an account?+
Yes, when a capture exists. Paste the post link and the viewer opens the latest Internet Archive capture inline. If the capture is from after the deletion it will show [deleted]; pick an earlier date from the list. If there are no captures, the post was not saved anywhere public.
What is the difference between [deleted] and [removed]?+
[deleted] means the author deleted it themselves. [removed] means a moderator, an automod rule, or Reddit's own systems took it down; the author may not know. A suspended account's content shows as [unavailable] or the profile returns 404. All three leave the URL in place, which is why captures of it can still exist.
Will the poster or the moderators know I read it?+
No. The capture comes from web.archive.org. Reddit never sees the request and nobody is notified.
Why can't I see comments below the post in the capture?+
Captures of new-design Reddit pages often load only the post and the first few comments, because the rest arrive by JavaScript after the crawler left. Captures of old.reddit.com pages usually include the full comment tree. The viewer checks both automatically and lists them in the capture list.
Does this replace Pushshift, Unddit or Reveddit?+
Partly. Pushshift and the tools built on it stopped working for the public after Reddit's 2023 API changes. Reveddit still shows moderator-removed items for many subreddits and is linked from empty results here. PeekVault only uses Internet Archive captures, which cover posts that were linked to or popular, not every post ever made.
Can I browse a subreddit or a user's full history?+
You can open captures of r/subreddit and u/username pages and step through them by year. That shows what those pages listed on each capture date, which for a busy subreddit is a snapshot of the front page, not an index of every post. Live browsing without an account is not possible on Reddit today.
Is reading archived Reddit posts allowed?+
Yes. The Internet Archive captures public pages under a long-standing practice, and reading them is ordinary web use. PeekVault does not scrape Reddit and does not store what you view.
